Thoughts on Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving, my first ever Thanksgiving and it got me thinking; what is Thanksgiving even?
Since I'm from Denmark I have never known Thanksgiving from anywhere else than TV-shows and films. Based on this I know Thanksgiving has something to do with family coming together eating turkeys, drinking beer and watching football. And then based on the name for itself, I really like the idea of this American holiday - focusing on giving thanks and appreciating all of the good things in your life seems like a really great concept.
But I decided to google Thanksgiving in an attempt to get to know a little more about this thanks giving holiday.
The first thing coming up when I google "Thanksgiving" is this google-voting thing about the favorite food of the holiday.

So, food is the thing? Most of the foods I don't even know, but from what I can read food is a major part of this festive holiday. Especially the Turkey, which have to cook for four hours and the traditionel pumpkin or pecan pies.
It all looks very delicious but non the less very American.
But why have this foodie holiday?
Historically it was something about the Pilgrims celebrating "First thanksgiving" as a celebration of their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. It is said that this feast lasted for three whole days. No wonder why food is such a huge part of this day.
So, it is a celebration, like most holidays. Spending the day eating lots of food, being with your dear ones and being thankful for all of the good things in your life. That sounds pretty okay to me.
Right now, the Turkey is in the oven, I have a beer by my side and the TV is running with football. I can't wait for dinner and to spend the night with my friends here in Hawaii at my first ever Thanksgiving.
Thank you.
